Raj Jariwala

Raj Jariwala’s practice engages systems of spatial representation and numerical abstraction, examining how maps and data function as constructed forms of knowledge. His works treat cartographic and numerical systems as expressive frameworks embedded with claims to truth, foregrounding their role in shaping perception. Through this, he addresses the gap between recorded information and lived experience, where measurement and reality remain misaligned.

Working primarily through drawing, Jariwala employs repetition, sequencing, and fragmentation to destabilise the apparent neutrality of data. His compositions register the dissonance between the “objective” gaze and embodied experience, where information is filtered and reconstituted through perception. In recent works, this inquiry extends into sound as a material condition, translated into line, density, and spatial structure. Sound is approached as a form that organises experience, allowing the intangible to be registered within the field of drawing.
