Atul Bhalla

(b. 1964)

Atul Bhalla is a conceptual artist working with environmental issues for more than two decades. His work invites the audience to engage directly with urban and metropolitan spaces, in particular water resources, in his city New Delhi, and those he visits during the course of international exhibitions and residencies. His work ‘Yamuna Walk’ is currently part of the travelling exhibition Walk On: From Richard Long to Janet Cardiff – 40 years of art-walking no at MAC Brimingham, until March 30th 2014. He has also participated in the Yamuna Elbe Project, a project about two rivers – Elbe in Hamburg and the Yamuna in Delhi in 2011-12. His recent solo shows include On the Edge at Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi, India, 2011; and Water Works curated by Donna Gustafsson at Grossman Gallery, Lafayette College, Easton,PA, USA, 2011 and I was not waiving but drowning-II at Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge, USA, 2010-2011. He has recently published two books on his performance works, Yamuna Walk by University Washington Press, and What will be my Defeat by GFLK Galerie für Lanschaftskunst Hamburg. Atul Bhalla has been invited to participate in the Sharjah Art Museum in the exhibition The Other and Me from 21 May to 21 June 2014.
