Anjali Bhargava

(b. 1977)

Anjali Bhargava is a Brooklyn, NY based photographer whose work tells stories about people -sometimes in the form of a traditional portrait but often not. Body issues, concepts and structures around beauty, issues of acceptability, and pride in imperfection are repeating themes in her work. She received her BS in Photography from the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. Her work had been shown in the US, Canada, India, and China.

Anjali commented on her works in Breath Series, the etymology of the word red is connected to the Sanskrit word Rudhira which means blood, bloody or red. But it wasn’t just Kali who was portrayed with red lips, Saraswati, Lakshmi and any number of more beatific goddesses bear sweetly smiling red lips.Red is afterall a symbol of not only war and danger but also passion and beauty. So you may find the wearer sexy, bold and passionate or you may deem her slutty and unnatural. Regardless, some impression is made. Ultimately it is one of the best cross cultural representations of the societal obsession with beauty which for many can be suffocating and even dangerous.

Her famous group and solo exhibitions includes, “Me Love You Long Time” at Aljira Center for Contemporary Art, Newark in 2012, “La Giuditta” at Latitude 28, Delhi in 2011, “Privacy Please” in A.I.R Gallery, New York at 2011, SAWCC Annual Art Auction Benefit, New York in 2007-11, Aljira Fine Art Auction at Aljira Center for Contemporary Art in Newark 2010.
