Artists from across South Asia have been delving into the possibilities of re-infusing traditional forms of art with new media creating idioms which lead to rethinking and reworking of the existing paradigms surrounding contemporary art. LATITUDE 28 brings forth a curated presentation of some of these South Asian artists whose practice encompass experimentation with mediums to explore themes of migration, climate change, biodiversity, mythology and socio-political issues. Within this, some artists’ works are reflective of a neo-miniature practice that infuses traditional schools of painting with contemporary new media and popular culture. Going back to the two of the most significant forms that are drawing and sculpture, the miniature section is juxtaposed with drawings of modern masters as well as sculptural works by contemporary artists who have ventured into unconventional ways of intermixing of material such as paper and ceramics. Alluding to mythological/ historical narratives in the modern context, these artists locate their identities at the crux of historicity and contemporaneousness.
