Hasmukh Makwana
(b. 1993)
Hasmukh Makwana is a contemporary visual artist whose practice is deeply rooted in the landscapes, craft traditions, and community life of Saurashtra, Gujarat. Raised amidst the rich visual culture of his native region, including embroidery, beadwork, and textile arts, Makwana’s work reflects the vibrant aesthetics and spiritual rhythms of rural life. His paintings are infused with motifs drawn from nature, wildlife, festivals, and community-specific rituals, which he reinterprets through a contemporary lens.
Makwana works across multiple mediums, often incorporating threads, pearls, and fabrics into his compositions. His process is both intuitive and material-driven, embracing experimentation with surface and technique to evoke emotional resonance. He finds particular joy in the act of making, his work is a celebration of the creative process as much as it is of his cultural inheritance. Blending rural visual vocabularies with modern sensibilities, his practice centers on the joy of representation and the poetic interplay between texture, color, and memory.
He received a Diploma in Applied Arts from Sheth C. N College of Fine Arts, Ahmedabad (2017), and went on to specialize in illustration with a Post Diploma in Visual Arts (Applied Arts) from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda (2019). His selected solo exhibitions include, ‘Loomed in Light,’ Round Them Oranges Gallery, Jaipur (2025); ‘Attachment of Beads,’ Ravishankar Raval Kala Bhavan, Ahmedabad (2024).
