Jyoti Bhatt
(b.1934)
Jyoti Bhatt studied painting and printmaking at M. S. University in Baroda. Inspired by his mentor, artist K. G. Subramanyan, he explored academic divides between art and craft, eventually leading to his deep interest in mural painting and fresco, which took him to Rajasthan. In the early sixties, Bhatt received a scholarship to further his studies at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Naples, Italy, and the Pratt Institute in New York, where he was exposed to abstract expressionism. His early works reflected the cubist style, later transitioning to pop art imagery before arriving at a style inspired by traditional folk imagery. Although Bhatt worked in various mediums, including watercolour and oils, it was his printmaking that ultimately garnered him the most recognition. In 1966, he returned to MSU Baroda with extensive knowledge of the intaglio process gained at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. During this period, he and his contemporaries at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Baroda came to be known as ‘The Baroda School’ of Indian Art.
In the latter part of the sixties, Jyoti Bhatt developed a passion for documenting traditional Indian craft and design. Initially asked to photograph Gujarati folk art for a seminar, he became deeply invested in recording the disappearing arts of Gujarat. His investigations into folk and tribal designs significantly influenced the motifs he employed in his printmaking, which often featured a personal language of symbols rooted in Indian culture—such as peacocks, parrots, lotuses, stylized deities, and variations of folk and tribal designs. Throughout his long career as a teacher at the MSU Faculty of Fine Arts, he photo-documented the university’s evolution, the artistic pursuits of students and faculty, and the architecturally significant buildings of Baroda.
Bhatt has showcased his works through numerous solo and group exhibitions both in India and internationally. Some of his recent solo exhibitions include ‘Through the Line & the Lens: A Selection of Prints and Photographs,’ curated by Rekha Rodwittiya, presented by LATITUDE 28, Bikaner House, New Delhi (2025); ‘The Photographic Eye of Jyoti Bhatt’ at Guild Art Mumbai and Galerie88, Kolkata (2017); ‘ROOP-SWAROOP,’ an exhibition of photographs at Satya Gallery, Ahmedabad (2017); exhibitions at Rukshaan Art Gallery, Mumbai (2017-18); ‘RE-INCARNATIONS,’ a mini-retrospective show of paintings, prints, and photographs at ARK Gallery, Vadodara (2018); a print show at Bihar Museum, Patna (2019); and ‘The Indian Portrait-XI – Jyoti Bhatt’s Photographs of His Contemporaries’ at Amdavad ni Gufa (2020). His recent group exhibitions include participation in the India Art Fair with LATITUDE 28, New Delhi (2023); a group show at Sunaparanta Goa Centre for the Arts (2019); photographic showcases at KIPF Kolkata International Photography Festival (2019) and Serendipity Art Festival, Goa (2019), curated by Nancy Adajania; and the presentation of a digital book and accordion book at India Art Fair with LATITUDE 28 & TAKE Editions (2020 & 2022). Some of his recent accolades include the Lifetime Achievement Award from Prafulla Dahanukar Art Foundation, Mumbai (2017) and the Savya Sachi Vishwa Kosh Award (2020). The artist is also a recipient of the ‘Honourable Mention’ from the International Print Biennale in Tokyo and the National Award from the Lalit Kala Akademi, India. He attributes much of his success to the unwavering support and encouragement of his life partner, renowned ceramicist (late) Jyotsna Bhatt.
